标题:Partial Centralization in a Durable-Good Supply Chain
摘要:There has been extensive research on the strategic choice between supply chain centralization or decentralization. However, most research assumes complete centralization (CC) or complete decentralization (CD) and omits the commonly adopted supply chain structure of partial centralization (PC). With PC, a firm owns a portion but not all, of its partner. To help address this research gap, in this paper, we make a major contribution by explicitly analyzing PC in a supply chain where a durable-goods manufacturer owns a portion of her downstream retailer. We start with a two-period model and derive analytic equilibrium outcomes of the supply chain and its firms under CC, CD and PC. Our main analytic findings are two-fold. First, PC with an appropriate ownership share can moderate the retail quantities in each period and alleviate the time-inconsistency problem of durable goods. As a result, PC can become the equilibrium structure for a durable-good supply chain. Second, the manufacturer’s equilibrium ownership share in the retailer decreases in the product durability and decision horizon, implying that CD is more likely to be the equilibrium supply chain structure for higher product durability and longer decision horizon. Finally, we conduct numerical examples for longer decision horizons to confirm the robustness of our analytic results and obtain more managerial insights.
